One of the best commercials in the 1990s, the Nike advertisement of “chicks dig the long ball” featuring Tom Glavine and Greg Maddux was a big hit. This was all pre-YouTube, so when it came on ESPN or MTV, everything or everyone was temporarily put on hold.
San Diego catcher Dillon Haupt had a nice homage to that classic ad by hitting three home runs last week.
In the bottom of the 11th inning during a non-conference game against UC Riverside last Tuesday, Haupt hit a walk-off solo round tripper to give his San Diego squad a 3-2 victory. The 6-foot- 5 catcher was the hero of the day for the Toreros.
The next day, Haupt hit a solo shot against UC Santa Barbara. On Saturday, the senior catcher hit a three-run home run against the University of San Francisco to pull the Toreros within one run of the Dons. The Toreros lost a 9-8 extra inning affair.
Haupt has nine home runs on the season, second-most on the Toreros behind Kris Bryant (22).
A senior catcher who was the West Coast Conference Player of the Month in March of 2012, Dillon is the son of Saundra and Steve Haupt.
