The 2012 Willmar Stingers Home Opener will feature 1985 World Series MVP Bret Saberhagen as a special guest. Local Atwater resident Mike Kingery played in 1986 with Saberhagen on the Royals and on the Colorado Rockies with hin in 1995.The Rockies engineered a trade-deadline deal on July 31, 1995 with the New York Mets that brought Saberhagen to Coors Field for the stretch run. In only their third season in existence, the Rockies were the first NL team to make the postseason as a Wild Card The Rockies lost in the NLDS to the eventual World Series champion Atlanta Braves in four games. Saberhagen played 16 MLB seasons and Kingery played 10 seasons in the big leagues, including a career-high batting average of .349 in the strike-shortened season of 1994. Saberhagen and Kingery’s manager that year was Don Baylor, a member of the 1987 Minnesota Twins team that won the first World Series in franchise history. Baylor was named as 1995 NL Manager of the Year.
